Demurrage is rarely a port problem. It is usually a documentation, haulage booking or communication problem that arrives with a port invoice.
Demurrage and detention charges are among the most avoidable costs in international freight, and among the most persistent. They accumulate quietly because the cause sits upstream of the invoice.
Documentation readiness
Entries should be lodged before arrival, with origin proofs and classification already settled. Cargo waiting on paperwork is cargo accruing charges for reasons that had nothing to do with the terminal.
Haulage booked to free time
Collection slots should be planned against free time, not against the day the cargo happens to be noticed. Where haulage capacity is tight, the slot should be secured at the point of booking the ocean leg.
Empty return planning
Detention frequently accrues after delivery, on empties that have nowhere to go. Confirming return depots and their acceptance windows in advance closes that gap.
Accountability by exception
Every charge should be attributed to a cause and an owner. Reviewing them together each month turns a recurring cost line into a shrinking one.
